We’re starting to get into the good weather, so I think it’s fitting that our awesome Sunday omnivore for today is Brian Wilson, mastermind behind The Beach Boys, a great summer band. But, really, this post is going to be about one of the greatest albums ever made, Pet Sounds. A friend of mine once said something akin to, “Overall, The Beatles were a better band, but not a single Beatles album by itself is as good as Pet Sounds.” And I think he’s right. Here’s the opening track, “Wouldn’t It Be Nice,” and holy jeez it’s amazing, still.
The more I listen to the album, the more I tend to think that “God Only Knows” is most likely the best song on the album, and possibly one of the best songs pop music has ever put out. It’s a far cry from “Surfin’ Safari,” or “Fun, Fun, Fun,” and really shows Brian Wilson knows how to write a song.
I know, right? Breathtaking. Unfortunately, since the album came out 44 years ago, there aren’t a whole lot of videos to show. So, instead, we’ll just do one more song that you can listen to, again and again, because it is beautiful. “You Still Believe in Me.”
There we have it. If you haven’t gone out and bought Pet Sounds yet, well, you should probably do that, right now. By the way, you might say, hey, why not show us “Sloop John B,” since that was on Pet Sounds, and that was good. As it turns out, it wasn’t originally going to be on the album, but since it was a hit single around that time, the record execs decided to throw the song right in the middle of the album. So, kind of not really a Pet Sounds song.
