Thank You For All Of Your Support Posted by Q’orianka Kilcher on May 29, 2009 at 12:50 pm

Thank you to everyone who supported and participated the demonstration we held in front of  Consulate of Peru in Los Angeles on May 26th. Here is some press about the evening and a video of the demonstration.

From La Opinion: (here are excerpts from the article, translated from Spanish)

Artists of the Hollywood film industry and human rights activists marched yesterday in Los Angeles at an event in support of indigenous Peruvians who have launched a campaign to defend the Amazon region.

Since last April 9 thousands of Indians have blocked roads demanding the repeal such laws, while the Peruvian government has opted for the use of military force….The main activist and promoter of the movement for indigenous Peruvians is actress Q’orianka Kilcher, who starred in 2005 in Pocahontas in the film The New World.
“It’s allowing the use of military force, violence and oppression against peaceful people whose only weapons are his presence and his voice,” said Q’orianka.
Her mother Saskia Kilcher, human rights activist, said that since last year, Garcia has passed a series of laws that have given priority to large corporations to take over land belonging to indigenous people.

Lately Peru is receiving strong foreign investments and demand for energy skyrocket.
The Peruvian government sees on the Jungle a fountain of resources to satisfy the appetite of foreign and local investors. However the native people living in there before any occidental arrive to America have the right to protest since they will be directly affected for any activity around their communities. On the other side the government has the responsibility to use Peruvian resources for the good of its own people and this is not happening even though poverty in Peru has decreased and all sectors had been experienced growth the progress is centralized in the coast and natives from Andean and jungle are gradualy abandon from this progress.

I consider unethical Alan Garcia’s action because the services and investments in education and infrastructure to the native communities of the Andean and jungle was ridiculous low but now that he needs to exploits their land he doesn’t want to respect native voice calling them citizens of second class. Most of Peruvians have native descendents and I am absolutely sure that 80% or more of Peruvians disagree with Alan Garcia’s violence and sober against our brothers from the jungle.

Peru was in peace and progressing slowly but progressing why Alan Garcia came out with this idea? What he was thinking about? Do we need more energy in gas or petroleum? I believe we are ok but maybe he wants to please international companies risking our most precious treasure which is our wonderful amazons.

I believe that Peruvians need to rise our voice but we need more channels to communicate with our congressman in Lima, it is so difficult to make our voice being hear I did try to express myself in many occasions with out results so can you imagine our natives brothers whom speak a native language how difficult or impossible has to be for them to let the government know their though I really believe Government need to invest in communication across all our nation so all community can rise their voice and be hear.
My prays with all native and police officers dead on these tragic events they are not responsible for a government with lack of common sense and understanding of Peruvians roots and values.
