New Art For The White House: Q&A with Diane Jensen Posted by Danny Jensen on May 28, 2009 at 7:19 pm

I was excited to hear that President Obama and his family are bringing in new art work to the White House, giving a fresh, contemporary spin to the more traditional choices of previous administrations.  For some professional insight, I spoke with Diane Jensen who has been an art dealer for the last 30 years.  Jensen Fine Arts specializes in American and European Paintings from the 19th through the 21st century, featuring Hudson River, Impressionist, Ash Can and Boston School tradition painters.  Diane works privately with collectors, and previously she owned a gallery on the Upper East Side of New York and one on Martha’s Vineyard, MA.  Diane is currently completing a book about art collecting, to be released in the early fall.  Oh yeah, and she’s my mom.

Which artists or specific works would you recommend for the Obama’s to consider?  What might you bring along if they invited you over for dinner?

I like the path they are on - I would encourage them to continue bringing in more African American artists and more women painters - I would bring paintings and drawings by Margery Ryerson (1886-1989) of the children she painted in tenement houses for the Obama girls, and for Barack and Michelle, paintings by Anna Walinska (1906-1997) who painted in Paris in the 30s, 40s with Picasso, Matisse and the boys - her work resembles theirs, and yet is distinctly her own style. Of course, I would bring them a signed copy of my book, and give them a few tips on collecting.

What are your thoughts on the works the Obama’s are borrowing from the Hirshhorn Museum and The National Gallery?

I’m sure Olga Hirshhorn, who just celebrated her 89th birthday, is thinking how happy her deceased husband Joe would be to know that works that they collected together will now be enjoyed in the White House.  I like the Obama’s diverse choice of art works.

Do you think the Obama’s new direction for White House artwork reflects a larger trend in art collecting today?

Yes, this does reflect a shift in the art world today. While the traditional 19th century art that has been displayed in the White House for many presidencies is historically important and beautiful, it will be a pleasure to see other works by equally important artists on display.

How do you think their choices will influence collectors and the public perception of art in general?  What kind of change do you hope to see?

Many people will identify with the work they are selecting, they will be more familiar with some of the artists. I love the eclectic choices they are making, bringing in a wide range of artistry - women painters, African American, and paintings and sculpture from around the world.  This is important for us as a country - to show our love and respect for all art, not just that produced in our own country.
What do you think the Obama’s artistic choices say about where we are heading as a country?

They are the best and brightest stars our country could have to demonstrate to the world, through these art selections, that our country is very aware and involved with the rest of the world.  Outstanding, and beautiful! As Irish author Frank McCourt would say, the Obama’s are “sparkling”!!
