Ever use coat hangers to make a wine rack? Or jerry-rig those old wooden wine boxes into edgy bookshelves? If you fancy yourself a DIY (”do it yourself”) expert, check out the family-friendly Maker Faire this Saturday and Sunday at the San Mateo County Expo Center in the San Francisco area. Though it’s too late to enter your finest home-grown accomplishment, take part in the exciting event and get inspired by all the other MacGyvers of the world.
This year’s fair is the 4th annual event, which has grown to be the largest festival in the country devoted to celebrating DIY culture and showcasing grassroots creativity and innovation. The theme this year is Re-Make America, inspired by President Obama’s call to start rebuilding and remaking — from the ground up. No one embodies this more than those DIY experts who are fashioning cutting edge devices from the corners of their garages. But it won’t just be your everyday home projects to admire. From a see-through pinball machine to 3-D camcorders, these inventions are imagination come to life. This year’s faire will include innovations in the areas of green tech, robotics, rockets, music performance, home energy monitoring, game systems, electronics, electric vehicles, and of course, arts and crafts.
The best part about it? How-to activities so you can learn how to do it all yourself. Learn how to create energy from your everyday waste, or how to make jewelry from those old kids’ toys. You can even learn how to build your own robot.
While we all may not be able to create our own home generators or electric cars, there are lots of DIY projects that help you save money and the environment, while getting those creative juices flowing.
