Daniel Hauser, the 13-year-old cancer patient and his mother Colleen who fled the state to avoid chemotherapy have returned home to Minnesota. The son and mother were due to appear in court last week for a hearing that could have resulted in a judge ordering chemotherapy to treat Daniel for Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Doctors claim without chemotherapy, Daniel’s cancerous tumor would likely kill him but the family preferred natural healing methods inspired by American Indian traditions which caused them to run away.
Should the court be able to dictate how a family should deal with illness? (Check out this great piece about the difficulties of chemo). Billy Best (who also ran away from chemo 15 years ago and is now a cancer survivor) believes the law has no business in personal healthcare decisions. (Watch video of Billy Best here. )What do you think?
