Talking about the dumb things US Representatives come up with is sort of like twittering: you feel bad for continuing the complete idiocy, and yet, somehow you can’t stop. It’s something about the amusing to terrifying ratio that just compels you to, you know, pay it forward.
Which why I’m chagrined (and yet thrilled!) to let you know about good old Representative Paul Broun — who’s a Republican from Georgia, as if that’s a huge surprise — who wants to make 2010 the official Year of the Bible!
According to Politico, Broun’s idea has taking form in a congressional resolution, which is being uniformly mocked and dismissed.
“This doesn’t have anything to do with Christianity,” says Broun.
Hrm. That sort of reminds me of when the NRA says things like, “Guns don’t kill people, people do.” Well, not to rip off Eddie Izzard, but, I think the gun helps?
Also, this official year of the bible doesn’t have anything to do with Christianity? Uh… I think it might have a little to do with Christianity. Just a little though!
I mean, it’s not a stretch since the point of the idea is “to issue a proclamation calling upon citizens of all faiths to rediscover and apply the priceless, timeless message of the Holy Scripture which has profoundly influenced and shaped the United States and its great democratic form of government.”
Hrm. “Calling on all faiths to rediscover” this other, BETTER faith?
Well, Broun is right about one thing, this is pretty priceless.
