Amidst all the Cannes hoopla over the past week Lars Von Trier decided he wanted to stand out.
Not only did he bring with him a film that is apparently somewhat out of control but he also decided that he was better than everyone else there, as he said
“I work for myself. And I am the best film director in the world.”
As a fan of Lars Von Trier I can’t help but smile at this. When it comes to getting buzz out about one’s film and manipulating people to see said films nobody tops Mr. Von Trier.
As for Antichrist - the film he is there with - all the crazy press the film is getting just makes me want to see it more - even though I know that that is exactly what good old Lars is hoping. And even though I am in a sense praising techniques that I would normally look down upon, it is hard for me not to approve of efforts to get more people to see art films and films by foreign directors - even if those directors are as nutty as Lars Von Trier.
