The Jesusita wildfire continues to rage through the foothills of Santa Barbara, California, forcing the evacuation of thousands of people.  Governor Schwarzenegger has declared a state of emergency in Santa Barbara County, and authorities are concerned that “sundowner” winds could continue to spread the fire, which has yet to be contained. While wildfires are not uncommon, especially around this time of year, drier conditions and drought due to climate change will surely make the fires more frequent and fiercer. Unless we find better ways to curb our greenhouse gas emissions and reduce the severity of these fires, the blazes themselves will continue to be a major contributor to climate change, as recent studies show.
To get an idea of the pervasive black soot created by these fires, which threatens the health of humans and the planet, check out the photographs taken by residents and sent to the Los Angeles Times. You can also track the fire and learn more on Google Maps. and check out this panorama shot from inside the Jesusita fire. I hope they can contain the fires quickly and no one is seriously hurt.
