In Mexico Cinco de Mayo commemorates the Mexican army’s unlikely defeat of French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862.

In the United States Cinco de Mayo is a day to celebrate Mexican heritage and culture. With that I give you 5 amazing Mexican films that you can watch in order to celebrate Mexican heritage, culture and of course filmmaking. Or simply put - 5 Mexican films for the 5th of May! (in no particular order)

Los Olvidados - Luis Buñuel’s film explores the slums of Mexico City and the children that live there.  It deals with classic Buñuel themes including poverty and despair

Silent Light -
Carlos Reygadas is one of the new faces of Mexican cinema and his Silent Light is a film that should be seen, It deals with a Mexican Mennonite village and a love triangle that goes beyond our world.

Y Tu Mamá También - Alfonso Cuarón’s film of two young men and one woman that take a road-trip together marks the beginning of the current surge in Mexican filmmaking. It is also a pretty great movie.

Macario - Nominated for the Oscar for best foreign language film, Macario is based on a story B. Traven adapted from the Brothers Grimm.  The film is a of Mexican archetypes and the perpetual quirks of the human condition.”

The Holy Mountain - Directed by strange and unqiue Alejandro Jodorowsky The Holy Mountain is a cult film that is based on The Ascent of Mt. Carmel” by St. John of the Cross and “Mount Analogue: A Novel of Symbolically Authentic Non-Euclidean Adventures in Mountain Climbing” by Rene Daumal. And instead of saying more you should probably just watch the trailer below - it says more than I could.
