Okay, it’s late, and I just got back from the Kentucky Derby pretty recently, so let’s not delay in getting to your awesome Sunday omnivores of radtasticness, the dudes in Wolf Parade. Listen to this song, “I’ll Believe in Anything,” and be absolutely blown away. No pun intended based on the video. If I were you, I would watch the video or not, but definitely listen to the whole song. It just explodes into triple-awesomeness towards the end (given that the rest of the song is double-awesome).
Do I know what’s going on in that video? Not at all. Do I care? Not at all. It’s just an amazing song. Now, the cool thing about Wolf Parade is that the band has two main songwriters, Spencer Krug and Dan Boeckner, both of whom are just amazing. And they both have side projects, too, that are really really good. But we’ll get to that in a second. The song above was written by Krug; this next one by Boeckner. It’s called “Shine a Light.” They’re both off Apologies to the Queen Mary, literally one of the best albums I own, period. After the jump.
So. Side projects. Boeckner’s main one is called Handsome Furs, and Krug is in…let’s see…Frog Eyes, Sunset Rubdown, and Swan Lake. Let’s start with Handsome Furs. They’ve got two albums - Plague Park and Face Control. I haven’t listened to Plague Park yet (it arrived in the mail today! (yes, I still buy CDs and don’t buy digital. I can’t even be a good enough music snob to insist on vinyl)), but Face Control is absolutely great. Here’s a live version of “All We Want Baby, Is Everything.” I debated whether to put this up, cause the quality’s not great, but the song is just sooooo good, I didn’t want to skip it. Also, only 30 people have watched this video. Consider yourself in the VIP line.
Here, though, is a video that’s a little better quality, in case you like to just hear the songs. It’s still live though. Handsome Furs, “Thy Will Be Done.” I really really think this album is fantastic, and can’t wait to hear Plague Park tomorrow.
Okay, on to Krug. Like I said, Sunset Rubdown and Swan Lake and Frog Eyes. I haven’t actually heard Frog Eyes yet, and it’s nigh impossible to find a quality video of the other two bands. But here’s a pretty decent (quality-wise) live version of “Mending of the Gown” (a great song) by Sunset Rubdown, filmed right here in Chicago (assuming you’re also in Chicago, though that’s quite an assumption). Enjoy.
Aaaannnnnd, let’s close with Wolf Parade again. How about…music only, “Sons and Daughters of Hungry Ghosts”? Perfect. Just so you know, this actually immediately precedes “I’ll Believe in Anything” on Apologies to the Queen Mary, and immediately succeeds “Shine a Light,” making it one of the more amazing three-song sequences in history. And, yes, I have a list of the best three-song sequences off one album. Who doesn’t? Also on it? “Thriller,” “Beat It,” and “Billie Jean.” Yeah. Those are sequenced together. Awesome.
