I’m sitting in the dark, due to a huge rainstorm as I write this, from the balcony of the International Medical Corps guesthouse in Bukavu, eastern DRC. We left Goma at the crack of dawn and sandwiched ourselves onto a boat that was full way beyond capacity. And we laughed the whole way because despite the immense darkness that exists here, this country is beautiful in so many ways. Bukavu feels far more like a city and is certainly more developed than Goma, but it is equal in beauty and in charm. We visited Panzi Hospital where IMC is training doctors and which has become world-renowned because of its incredible work with thousands of women who are in need of surgical repair for a condition called “fistula,” a severe gynecologic rupture. It’s a frighteningly common condition in eastern DRC because of lack of obstetric care, and the epidemic of rape.
Panzi Hospital’s Founder and Director is Dr. Denis Mukwege, often referred to as “the savior of women “ and was named by a prestigious Nigerian newspaper as African of the Year in 2008. But this man is beyond labels. He shared some of his experiences with us and as you can imagine, they are horrific. The youngest rape victim he has had to treat was a three year old girl.
I have to admit that after yesterday’s displacement camps in Goma I was feeling pretty desolate. But visiting this hospital today felt as though there is a glimmering the light at the end of a long and dark tunnel. There are women everywhere who have suffered innumerable traumas and they are finally being given the treatment and care they deserve. This place is set up like a full on sisterhood. And the strength of women in numbers was powerful and inspiring.
Tomorrow we drive to Chambucha which is about a hundred kilometers north of Bukavu. The drive can take up to nine hours as the roads are treacherous and muddy from the rains. We have been briefed that this is an extremely volatile area. Lately there has been a marked increase in rebel activity. As I write I’m told there are ongoing actions occurring and the wounded are being brought to the hospital where we will be. Obviously, we have increased our security measures for the trip, but we all thought it was essential to see the work being done on the front lines of this conflict. IMC is providing the only health care in the area, and it would be futile to come all this way and not visit one of its most extreme and vulnerable areas. Communication is virtually impossible due to its remote location, so I will write when we return (weather permitting) on Friday…. (Don’t spare the horses!)

well, your blogging is already backfiring throughout the internet. especially, the “Day 1″.
on the other hand, expecting from a person who keeps partying at Groucho ad infinitum, to suddenly become a humanitarian who really cares about other people, well, if it’s not naive, then it’s just plain stupid and myopic.
in other words, it won’t help you. even if you’re gonna stay there for a year. and that’s guaranteed.
“stupid and myopic”? Interesting choice of words to describe someone who is actually DOING something. Is your daily “How I”m going to make the world a better place” itinerary full? Or have you given up all hope since the almighty and powerful have snuffed out any and all hope for a better existence? Inspiration is worth more to some than others… Whether Sienna is there for a personal reason, or for larger selfless goals is irrelevant. If she can provide inspiration to someone else to journey within, and help others it’s a worthy cause.
I just can’t agree with you A– that Sienna is going, providing a witness to what is happening, is an admirable thing. If it moves one person to follow the story of the Congo and the plight of its people, than this is time well spent. I would have a hard time making the decision to go to the Congo– making that choice is not so easily done, a journey not easily taken.
well, like I already said here, the destiny of such countries is not going to change. the almighty and powerful geniuses of developed countries found a really cheap way of using third world countries’ natural resources and their people as laboratory rats for bio-experiments just in exchange for food and shelter. it’s all about money, always.
those who are lucky and smart enough, they will find another country and home to live.
and like I already said, it’s about overpopulation. the population of this planet keeps growing exponentially, but the amount of intellectual capabilities of human beings is not so much. so the only option that’s left for “unlucky” people is just to multiply and multiply. and the circle is closed perpetually. in other words, they are alive because there is some specialized interest, and of course, the profit.
as for Sienna there, she is going to see and to hear only what she’ll be allowed to see and to hear.
on the other hand, the purpose of her being there is not people of Congo, I think her purpose be there is more of a personal kind.
I usually don’t respond to this garbage, but please! “destiny is not going to change”. I feel so sorry you and your distorted view of the world. I can only suggest that before you backseat drive around the globe that you visit the Congo, and hold a dying baby, and sit with an eight year old who has just been raped, and you look directly into the eyes of a hungry child, after that, you come back to the comforts of home and attempt to write this foolish diatribe. I suspect you will feel very differently. Then you talk about destiny and one’s purpose.
You have no idea!
Peace
It is the reason why she is there that bothers me, damage control, a week out of her life is not much if it gets her career back on track, I have worked in Nairobi and conditions are bad but lots of people help and I have a lot of admiration for them, but Millers reason for being there is not for the good of the people, its for her.
Listen, we know it makes people feel empowered to be “celebrity whisperers”, wholly enabled to interpret the motivations of those much more famous than themselves. But when you boil it down, people who’ve been blessed with the ability to draw mass attention in turn using that attention to highlight pressing issues is a positive thing.
Both A and sunseeker need to get a life when someone is trying to do some good don’t go bashing them - maybe you guys should try to help people who are in desperate need - shame on you
Some people are SO cynical and quick to judge. Good for Sienna using her high profile to highlight the incredible suffering in this war-torn and devastated country.
wHAT SAD PEOPLE YOU ARE A AND SUNSEEKER i WOULD BE INTERESTED TO HEAR WHAT YOU DO TO HELP ANYONE ALTHOUGH IT SOUNDS LIKE YOU ARE THE PEOPLE THAT NEED SOME SPIRITUAL HELP
Can’t believe that A and sunseeker still go on slandering. Sienna is brave and a good spirit and truhfull in her reports. It is important to look where it’s the darkest and she certainly doesn’t turn her eyes away. It must also be good for the people that a unassuming and decent young woman (who is not perfect, but for christ sake who is ?)pays attention. Attention in action is love !!! A and sunseeker should start looking at their own shadow…perhaps they become a little more human and realize that all this slander and bad wishing causes sorrow and pain. In the first place to themselves because so much bad thinking makes unhappy and ugly. Sienna deserves respect and good wishes. She has paid enough !!!! People trying to ruin her life in the name of morale ! What a shame !! The ‘destinity’ of the country might not be changed but sitting there and slandering other people and feeling righteous certainly makes the world a worse place. You just have to look whats happening in that country ! All wars are born out of hate of others. Only people, everybody can make a difference by acting with care. And it would be advisable to grant that to anybody.
nice ‘essay’, G. )
but who told you that the world was ever sweet and beautiful place to live?
you’ve been duped, G. the world is not sweet and rosy, and never it was. the world just doesn’t give a f about you or any other human being. the Mother Nature does everything to wipe out human beings from the face of this planet. the planet is beautiful, not the world.
and right now the great Mother Nature sends you its the warmest greetings - ’swine flu’.
TBH it doesnt matter what the reason is, it is good celebs are highlighting problems in the third world.
Oh Sienna…..it’s so important that you’re in the Congo as a witness….keep up the good fight…..hopefully we will see an end to this brutal reality.
This blog is supposed to be about highlighting the plight of people in the Congo, not an argument about motives.
I agree with AH, that whatever their reason for being helpers, they do bring needed media attention to the region.
keep going darling!your Godmother is v.proud of you!love,as ever,Diana
My question to A is this….would it be more palatable to you if George Clooney was the one blogging? Sienna is telling the story of the brave work of the International Medical Corps. If you had actually read her blog, you might understand that. It seems that instead, you simply see the name Sienna Miller and take precious time out of your day to say nasty things. She is truly putting her life in danger to tell this story. She is not, as you say, seeing only what they allow her to see. She has willingly put herself on the frontlines of this conflict to tell the strories of the real heroes…the IMC. There is no damage control here. I applaud her and all of the crew for their bravery….including my brother, David. A-please stop wasting space on this blog with your assumptions about a person you know only through the tabloids….take some time to research what the International Medical Corps is doing in the DRC…it is a much better use of your time.
Sienna, I am so proud of what you are doing. june sent me your blog and I know your dad is so proud and probably worried sick about you. Will look forward to reading more on Friday.
A and Sunseeker are sick sad people and should keep their vitriol to themselves I wonder if they have ever given anything back to the planet ? Keep up the good work Sienna well done
Sienna is a brave, strong woman, who is taking action and raising awareness. Thank you! Traveling to DRC is not easily done and it is dangerous, so those who are sitting comfortably in front of their computers and spreading your negative thoughts - shame on you. What are YOU doing to help?!
If you want to get involved, educate yourself about the conflict minerals being taken from Congo. This is what they are fighting for - control of the metals that are used in YOUR computers and cellphones. Control of these resources is what is driving the war in Congo, and the people there are paying a very heavy price. Thank you Sienna, and all those who are working to bring this conflict into the light. You CAN help, so get involved.
my answer to J.
how do you know for sure what I do know?
like I said, the population is growing but the amount of natural intellect is not. it means that we have more naturally intellectually crippled people in population than we had 50 years ago for example. in other words, the amount of intellect on the planet remains constant. and the amount of stupid posts here only prove that.
but then again if you’re not so smart, you can do nothing about it, because it’s the Mother Nature’s ‘decision’.
A and Sunseeker are sick sad people and should keep their vitriol to themselves and not point it to Sienna who is doing such good work. I would be interested to hear what they contribute to the world !
A -
How exactly are you measuring global intellect? I’d like to see your stats please.
Calling people stupid for caring and trying to make this beautiful planet and people’s lives better - what are you 12? i have yet to see you offer anything positive on this blog. i am sorry that you spend your time in such negativity. it must suck.
it is true that global population is increasing at an unsustainable rate, however, that does not mean that millions must live in terror, have their families butchered or raped. raising awareness about international atrocities educates people (which INCREASES knowledge btw), so that they can help those who may not be able to break free from their circumstances. how can you be so selfish, so cynical and so cold? perhaps you have never sat with a woman who has survived it, held her hand and hug her as she cried. I am certain Sienna has seen many people on this trip who have lived through more horror than you can imagine.
I applaud Sienna, IMC, and all the unnamed heroes around the world who are taking risks every day in an effort to stop the violence.
Kat -
“perhaps you have never sat with a woman who has survived it, held her hand and hug her as she cried.”
perhaps, you are right. or perhaps sitting, holding hands and hugging just doesn’t really help. perhaps it just doesn’t work that way. and you perhaps just don’t get it.
” how can you be so selfish, so cynical and so cold?”
you should ask that question to Sienna, first of all.
and even if you think that she’s honest on the photos there, keep in mind that she’s “an award-winning actress” and she’s “good at crying”. and don’t be surprised, when in a couple of weeks you will see her in UK or US partying ad nauseam.
sitting with someone who has experienced something of this magnitude, evokes empathy -something which you seem to be lacking. i get it - believe me. there are actually things you can do to help alleviate some of the suffering or prevent future atrocities, but you seem to have given up. there IS hope, and a way to help. helping others see what is going on and ‘our’ direct connection to what is taking place in DRC. it won’t be easy - put pressure on governments and companies to stop buying conflict minerals. they are available elsewhere. they do not have to be purchased from nations that are killing and raping their countrymen. this is the worst loss of human life since WWII and you choose to say - too bad. to say nothing of the rapes.
THOUSANDS of women.
lastly, have you met sienna? do you know her? or do you simply read what’s fed to you? how do you know her genuine intentions? how do YOU know what she is thinking or feeling? when I see photos of her out, enjoying her life, “partying ad nauseam” i will know that she is appreciating all that she has, all the more so because of what she has experienced on this trip. i will know that she has DONE SOMETHING. she will know that through her words and this journey, she has called many to action by highlighting the conflict and the situation of thousands of woman in DRC.
I ask, again, what are you doing?
Still awaiting your global intelligence stats.
yeah there surely is hope and I didn’t say that there isn’t. moreover, the hope is the only real thing that human beings can have, I mean permanently.
and even though it never really helps, the hope keeps you in denial perfectly well.
so, keep hoping.

Kat-A is a waste of energy…we will continue the good fight and leave A to join the legions of those, as A calls them, “intellectually crippled.” We know the truth, as does Sienna, as do hundreds of thousands of people across the world. People who chose to DO rather than jump up on a soap box and preach. I wonder….why would someone take the time to blog on a website dedicated to affecting change in the world about how hopeless and idiotic the world is? Again….educate yourselves….look into the International Medical Group and the wonderful things they are DOING….find out how we as Americans, as human beings entrusted with the health of this planet and it’s inhabitants, contribute to this conflict and what we can do to CHANGE it. Sienna, IMC, and the rest of you that are there telling the story….thank you.
I am the cinematographer that was on this trip with Miss Miller. I am going to dispel all rumors and lay to rest any question in regard to her involvement and/or behavior.
I met up with Miss Miller in Nairobi, Kenya where we boarded a flight together (coach) to Kigali, Rwanda.
There we met up with the International Medical Corps and took the long and bumpy ride in a 4×4 to the border in Goma. She voluntarily took the center seat with no safety buckle in the front of the truck between the driver and the front passenger seat. For anyone that has traveled in this region of the world, to sit in that seat for 4 hours is grueling, let alone after a 10 hour flight from London.
We arrived at the border, crossed, and checked in to our hotel.
I am a documentary filmmaker with $5,000.00 in my bank account. Sienna stayed at the same hotel with the same accommodations as me and this would be the same hotel I stayed at with or without her in tow.
For anyone who thinks there is luxury hotels anywhere in DR Congo, are as ill equipped to be a journalist as they are a stone thrower.
We spent long grueling days in Goma, woke up early, worked all day and then at the end of the night, when all I wanted to do was go to sleep, she stayed up and processed it all in her blogs.
In everything we did, she simply asked one question, “What’s next?”
Yes, I had heard all of the stories but for you to think because you read something in a tabloid, that it is true, or you are somehow above making mistakes, is laughable at best, and really should be your wake up call. Instead of commenting on the plight of the disenfranchised you are slamming a soul on this planet trying to make a difference with her life.
Imagine for a moment if you used these energies for good. What kind of change could be happening in your town? With you family? Around the globe?
Miss Miller absolutely wrote EVERY SINGLE WORD of her blogs and she endured all of the same hardships that traveling in this region of the world requires. Not eating for long periods of time, no electricity, clean water, bed bugs, and mosquitoes.
In an industry where image is everything, it is a shame that you will never see all the times she sacrificed her own comfort for the team or the story. That doesn’t sell papers. That doesn’t feed the machine.
Sienna Miller is the real deal. Trust me, I brought with me all the same preconceptions as I was racked with anticipation in my ability to tell this story. I learned that until you meet a person, until you know a person, you CANNOT believe what is written about them. People love to tear people down, for whatever reason.
Actually, that is the least of my concern.
What does concern me is doing everything that I can to mobilize people to go out there and make a difference.
Sienna was doing just that.
As I said before, she is the real deal.
Celebrate ones accomplishments, not their mistakes.
My hat is off to her and all of the change makers doing what they feel is right in the face of the naysayers.
She spent five days in the Congo. So what? she’s spent 10 times that much on vacation this year alone. if she were really affected by what she saw, she wouldn’t be able to leave and go “meh, what’s next”. this is pure PR to try and salvage her failing career, and she has no shame!
Saw ya on “The Late Show” with David Letterman…..Thanx 4 Caring about the less fortuate, sick and hungry…..I can cook and play the drums I might fit in In Africa….just ask Carmine!!!! All The Best ….Sivle(Civil)James
I too saw you on “the today show” and I appreciate your attention and the fact that you brought this website to me. I already knew about the conditions in Congo but I feel that the world is truly a better place because you chose to go there and shine a light on the situation. I also feel very glad that through the documentary you star in important organizations and people are getting recognition for their good and hard work.
