New Yorkers are a tough, savvy bunch of people who proudly argue that they live in the best city on Earth (have you ever read the New York Times? I think the city’s tourism board ghost writes for them). Well, New Yorkers have once again proven their brilliance in a match up against the bureaucrats at the Food and Drug Administration. Those weak-kneed FDA staffers who love a good lobbyist when they see one, approved cloned meat and dairy for human consumption last year. Imagine you and a friend trying to cool off on a sweltering summer evening with matching root beer floats. Sounds delicious, huh? But, what if your refreshing drinks included scoops of vanilla ice cream from two–yet the same–cows! Sounds rather unpleasant, right? Well, Ben and Jerry’s and the food policy advocacy group, Center for Food Safety, decide to play an April Fools on some New Yorkers by offering free samples of cloned dairy to them for FREE. Despite offering free dairy products, people said NO. Now, remember, this wasn’t done in front of the FDA, but in a park in New York City where people seem to be a bit more concerned and aware of food safety issues. If you’re as smart as these New Yorkers, join them in telling Congress that consumers deserve better and have the right to know if our food is cloned. takepart and Sign the Center for Food Safety’s petition today.
