Your awesome omnivorous Sunday band for today is Spoon. Now, I’ve mentioned Spoon here and there in the past, and my total love for the band, but today, we delve into the music itself. This also might be a particularly hard post for me to write, because Spoon’s last four albums have all been, quite simply put, amazing, and it makes it very difficult to choose just a few tracks to highlight. But let’s start with “Sister Jack,” off Gimme Fiction. No, I don’t really know what’s going on in the video.
Words like “sparse indie-rock” and “spare riffs” are often tossed around when talking about Spoon, which is really just code for, they don’t have to fill their songs with too much nonsense to make music sound really, really good. A perfect example of this sort of songwriting is “Don’t You Evah,” which is off the latest album, Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga. And thanks to Spoon for not disallowing embedding on their official videos. After the jump.
Unfortunately, there’s no official video for what’s probably my favorite Spoon song, “Finer Feelings,” which was off the most recent album as well. But here’s a video someone made as a project, and you can listen to it and go, wow. What an amazing song.
So I haven’t even gone back past the last two records yet. I think we’ll go, then, to Kill the Moonlight, and “Jonathon Fisk.” It rocks.
And, just for good measure, here’s a live version (it starts abruptly, but nothing is really missed) of “Anything You Want,” which is from Girls Can Tell. It’s got excellent sound quality for a live version, and I just love this song. I wish it were longer than two minutes.
Man. Spoon. So consistently awesomely good. All four records I mentioned above are must-haves. And, though, like we know, Spoon isn’t full of vegetarians, that we know of, takepart with your free vegetarian starter kit.
And listen to more Spoon. It’s so good!
