Time Magazine: Female Ambition “Curious Force” Posted by EA Hanks on March 19, 2009 at 6:32 pm

Time Magazine has a piece today on media mogul and controversy collector Arianna Huffington. (Disclaimer: I used to work for her.) The piece covers the usual things: Huffington Post is insanely popular, its news is skewed, it doesn’t pay its bloggers and the majority of the site collects its news from other outlets, but then it floats some traffic to the original sources .

Par for the course, in other words.

All until the last paragraph, wherein, straight out of left field comes this:

Female ambition is a curious force. When its outlets are blocked, it sometimes seems to settle on the nearest object — a spouse, a child, a cause. But in rare cases, it finds its perfect vehicle. When that happens, it’s best to get out of the road or jump in for the ride. Huffington might even let you drive.

Uh… I’m sorry?

Belinda Luscombe, you’ve lost me.

Female ambition? Like, “Out, damn spot” ambition? And how exactly was Arianna’s ambition blocked? And when you say “sometimes it seems to settle on the nearest object” do you mean when women don’t get what they want, they go all “Yellow Wallpaper” and obsess about whatever just happens to be around? Sucks to be near one of these “ambitious women.” Yikes!

I honestly can’t tell what happened in that last paragraph, or what exactly is being said, but I know that it gives me a bad taste in my brain.

takepart by checking out the Girls, Women and Media project, which works to “increase awareness of how pop culture and media represent, affect, employ, and serve girls and women—and to advocate for improvement in those areas.”

Maybe then you’ll be able to tell me what on earth just happened in that last paragraph!
