SXSWi: Using Tech for Social Good Posted by Adriana Dunn on March 16, 2009 at 3:16 pm

It’s chaotic at times here in the convention center, especially at the breaks between panels—it gets hot, crowded and noisy. My head is spinning from the overstimulation, so on my way up the escalator I popped a couple aspirin. A guy heading down the escalator saw me and said “Aspirin?” with a desperate look on his face, and I said “yes!” but he continued to be carried down, and I continued to travel up. I fumbled the bottle and tried to throw a few but it didn’t make it to the poor guy. (Sorry, dude!) Speaking of being crowded and noisy, how ’bout that internet? Seems to be getting more so every second. One panel I sat in on for a few minutes discussed all this noise and the lack of using online discussions as a catalyst for the next step—action. The panelists also talked about the use of GPS and moblie tech, and how crucial they are for the implementation of real change.

Speaking of real change, I went over to Stubb’s for a social networking for social good event around lunchtime and it was at capacity. It’s amazing and inspiring that so many people are passionate about using technology to fuel social change. I can’t wait for the new TakePart.com, which taps into this emerging movement and provides users with the tools they need to make real, tangible, quantifiable change. Be sure to sign up for the preview of the new site. We’d love to hear your thoughts.
