Spain has been working hard to create a good deal of its power from wind, and, as we could probably guess, the more wind there is, the more power is created. With that in mind, I think it’s pretty awesome that last week, incredibly gusty weather meant that, at one point, 40 percent of Spain’s power was wind-generated.
The peak came on Thursday, and The Guardian (via the New York Times), has the info.
The peak of 11,180mw of electricity supply came mid-morning yesterday [Thursday, March 5], as fierce winds swept across much of north-west Spain, where most of the country’s extensive wind farms are situated. That covered 29% of Spain’s energy needs at the time. The percentage had been even higher, reaching above 40% for several hours, earlier in the morning when demand for electricity was lower.
And that was generated from only 69 percent of the theoretical potential the country has to harness wind power. The New York Times article linked to above goes deeper into the statistics.
In statistics published last month, the Global Wind Energy Council ranked Spain third in terms of overall installed wind-power capacity, at nearly 16,000 megawatts. Ahead of Spain are Germany, at nearly 24,000 megawatts of capacity, and the United States, at No. 1, with over 25,000 megawatts.
And then they say, we here in the States may be number one, but that still only accounts for 1 percent of our power. Which, if I’m doing my math correctly, is less than 40 percent.
