I had the honor of seeing Mr. Wajda (83 today!) speak at Lincoln Center this past fall when they did a comprehensive retrospective of his work and I have to say the man is kind of amazing.   He is considered the seminal Polish director and has spent much of filmmaking career creating films that not only tell amazing stories but also address key political and social issues.

Back in 2000 he even received an honorary Oscar for his incredible work.
