The NY Times recently had a great article about “trading what you have for what you need.” the piece included lots of great ideas and resources for exchanging goods and services including swaptree.com a Web site where people trade books (including textbooks), video games, CDs and DVDs online, paying only for shipping. Not only is the idea great for your wallet but its great for the environment since trading items causes less waste! takepart and get trading at swaptree.com.

swaptree.com is brilliant. Been using it for over a year. I can’t believe how cool it is. An addictive site that saves you a pile of money and is good for the planet too.
I love it!
Great post, Giulia–thanks for keeping us posted about the NYT bartering article. (One of our new writers is currently working on one for Shoestring.
Also, if you haven’t already, check out the “Swap, Not Shop” article we published in our October 2008 launch issue, including a review of SwapTree and its three closest competitors: http://www.shoestringmag.com/live-on-less/live-on-less-the-new-swap-meets-are-online
I used Zwaggle to get the first three issues of Craft Magazine (newsstand price: $14.99 each) for just the cost of shipping (about $5)! I gave them to a friend living year-round on Martha’s Vineyard to help get her through the winter without losing her mind.
NPR did a radio show this summer about freegans and dumpster diving. It’s great that major news sources are now covering alternative consumer economies.
Hi there,
was looking for some barter websites too. Tried many of them, but I’m most satisfied with barterquest.com as you can also trade everything there for free there, even services and real estate!
Check out this article at Shoestring magazine.
