Stiller as Phoenix at Oscars

Last week I wrote about Joaquin Phoenix’s bizarre behavior and last night Ben Stiller used his Oscar appearance to mock Phoenix. Watch the video:
Okay yes Phoenix is acting weird, but does an Academy Award nominated actor deserve to be made fun of on the Academy Awards? I found this to be pretty lame. I also think if Phoenix’s whole wacked-out act is indeed a hoax, that’s also pretty lame. I guess I just prefer the Oscars stick to honoring artists rather than making fun of them, especially if they are in the midst of a genuine mental breakdown. And I emphasize the If .

Couldn’t agre more, and I think Stiller’s talents could have been used better.
I heard his brother in law, Casey Affleck, was making a whole Borat-style documentary on Joaquin’s Andy Kaufman-esque shenanigans.
I would love to know if that rumor is true! But I have to disagree here: Yes! Phoenix deserves to be made fun of. The academy awards could use a healthy does of self-deprecation…and this was all in good fun. I don’t think poking fun at Phoenix’s weird behavior changes our opinions about his great past performances.
