Climate change has already motivated many people to relocate their homes, by choice or neccesity, to safer place, in what has been described by The Washington Post as ‘Ecomigrations’. While being forced to move because of drastically changing weather patterns may seem like a far away possibility, we have only to look to the hundreds of Americans displaced by Hurricane Katrina. The Washington Post ominously reports:
If even a fraction of the consequences of global climate change that scientists are forecasting come true, disasters such as Hurricane Katrina might become the norm, not the exception. In a world afflicted by overpopulation and environmental degradation, he asked, is the irrational person the one who acts or the one who says the future will look after itself?
As frightening as the possibility of mass ecomigration seems, my hope is that we can begin to work towards quickly reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and better preparing and planning responses for severe weather conditions.
