What if there were a car company out there where the least efficient car being built gets 100 miles to the gallon? And the most efficient use no gasoline at all? This is not merely a hypothetical question, my friends, as the good people at Aptera are in the business of creating the most efficient cars possible. And, better yet, their all-electric Aptera 2e should be rolling off the assembly lines in October, and will cost somewhere between $25,000 and $40,000. Let’s take a loot at it in action:
It’s from the future! Anyhow Road & Track tell us about the car that, by charging it overnight, can get you up to 100 miles of driving. And they got a road test of the car, as well.
With the rotary “shifter” clicked to D3, the most aggressive setting, it’s responsive, easily modulated and reasonably quick: [Aptera Chief Engineer] Reichenbach says 0–60 mph in under 10 seconds with a 90-mph top speed with its pack of lithium-phosphate-ion-”pixie dust” cells — that last part suggesting that their exact composition is a secret.
This price range is much lower than I expected it to be (not that I can buy one anytime soon). And in only about eight months, too! Around 4,000 people have already put down a deposit to get one of these cars, which means this might become more than just a novelty. Here’s another video, with the company’s founders discussing their vision.
As Road & Track says, “It seems as if the future is here today…or at least come this October.” takepart and visit Aptera’s website.
