Climate Change Threatens Fish Populations: ITOTD Posted by Danny Jensen on February 12, 2009 at 9:15 pm

Climate change will likely force critical species of fish to migrate towards the poles, badly disrupting fisheries and the overall marine ecosystem, according to a new study released today.  The frightening development could happen in only a few decades, and cause the extinction of certain varieties of fish and eliminate a vital food source for developing countries in particular.  The ramifications will be very widespread, according to the AP:

The paper, appearing in a British journal, Fish and Fisheries, says the turnover of species will be “dramatic,” affecting 60 percent of present biodiversity, and with repercussions for the entire food chain.

Did you catch that?!  (Pun intended)  The entire food chain! We’re not just talking about fewer fish ‘n’ chip shops, although those will certainly be missed.  My guess is that preventing this disastrous outcome will require both a drastic reduction of greenhouse gases to slow these effects of climate change, and for fisheries to develop smarter, more sustainable methods of catching fish to ensure healthy populations.

This truly is disturbing! Everyone needs to get serious and get educated on the issues at hand. The subject of how we can save our planet should be something taught to everyone. For example, there is a great book titled, “Agenda for a Sustainable America,” by John Dernbach that gives great insight on climate change. This book should be used in high school, college, and graduate school classrooms all over the country.

Acidification is emerging as one of the more immediate threats; if the data is reliable, we could be witnessing an escalating (or is it “descalating” ;o) pH drop, with consequences on the shell integrity of crustaceans and molluscs, algae and even plankton/phytoplankton … oolites, coccoliths…. brrrr! doesn’t bear thinking about!

You are both right, acidification is disturbing and serious. We all need to take action to help solve the climate crisis and slow the destruction of marine life. Thanks for the comments!
