A Green Valentine’s Day Action Plan Posted by Danny Jensen on February 12, 2009 at 6:44 pm

Valentine’s Day is almost here, and you’re still not sure what to do for your sweetheart?!  Worry not, I’ve come up with an inspirational Valentine’s Day Action Plan for this Saturday.  I know some people aren’t crazy about the holiday, and others will watch films about love unfulfilled, or just floss, but for those of you who feel compelled to celebrate, I’ve mapped out the day for you.  Don’t worry, I’m not crazy about the mushy, Hallmark-business either, I just think it’s a great day to show someone how important they are to you.  So, here we go…

9:30 am Breakfast in Bed

Not having to leave your bed to have breakfast, now that’s what I call love.  Keep it simple.  No need to lose your mind trying to make heart-shaped pancakes.  If there’s a bakery nearby, grab some of your love’s favorite pastries, or cook up a quick scramble of local eggs, and brew up a pot of fair trade coffee.  Place everything on a tray, (if you don’t have one, cover a baking sheet with a nice cloth) and tip-toe back to the bedroom.  Don’t live together? Showing up at the door with breakfast treats is perfectly acceptable.

10:30 am Cultural Adventure

Remember that museum/park/obscure walking tour that your main squeeze keeps mentioning they’d love to check out?  Now is the time to act like tourists.  Head outside for some fresh air and a bit of cultural enlightenment.  We often take for granted the amazing places that are right down the street, and rediscovering your neighborhood with your special someone will help keep you from taking each other for granted.

12:30pm Picnic Lunch

Make your way to the nearest Farmer’s Market and pick up some stinky cheese, a bit of fresh fruit and a loaf of bread.  (While you’re there you could pick up a few items for dinner, too!)  Now head to a secluded park bench or, if it’s chilly where you live, someplace warm and out of the way to nibble on your (ahem) findings.

1:30 pm Create!

What better way to show your love then by making something for your loved one.  But again, keep it simple: you don’t have to hold a B.F.A. to be creative.  Readymade always has clever ideas for repurposing everyday items into something amazing. You could also paint some pottery for one another  or write each other Valentine’s on recycled paper.  The goal is to have some laughs while creating something unique together.

4:00 pm Favorite Movie/Nap

It’s been a long day of love already, so head back to the homestead throw on a movie you both enjoy, and relax.  And why not snack on some delicious fair trade chocolate and sip some soothing organic tea?  You could also give each other massages to help unwind.  Most likely these activities will lead to an afternoon nap or whatever

7:30 pm Cook Up A Tasty, Local and Organic Dinner Together

Remember all those fresh vegetables you picked up at the farmer’s market?  Time to put them to good use and make a Valentine’s Day dinner together.  Don’t worry about getting too fancy, just pick something you both really enjoy eating and have fun!  Check out Harvest Eating for some simple, seasonal and sumptuous recipes.  Pour a couple of glasses of organic wine and dig in!

9:30 pm Evening Activities

If you’re feeling festive, head out to catch some live music, or keep it really local and stay in.  How about playing a green board game like Gardenopoly.  Or you could make up some games of your own… I’ll leave it up to you at this point, but remember stay safe and stay green.

Well, I hope that helps inspire you and let me know how it goes in the comments section below.
