An interesting fact popped up today as I was scanning this list about ways to go green and save money (at the same time, no less!) put together by greenzer.com and published at MSNBC. It turns out that joining one of those DVD-by-mail rental clubs is significantly more environmentally-friendly than going down to the store to rent Bring It On, Again, again, because it’s so awesome.
When it comes to renting movies things have been going in the green direction. Believe it or not, a study found that renting three movies through Netflix and having them delivered uses 33% less energy and emits 40% less CO2 than picking up those same movies from a traditional rental place just two miles away.
That’s pretty significant reduction in pollution, I must say. I had Netflix for a while a few years back, and it was awesome for a while because I was able to catch up on all the movies I had just never gotten around to seeing, some of which not viewing literally makes you un-American (such as The Godfather: Part II). But then I got lazy, and after I had The Searchers sitting on top of my TV for about a month and a half, I realized I was just throwing money down the drain. This certainly isn’t a knock on Netflix or Blockbuster’s DVD-by-mail plan, but rather on my inability to do simple things like watch a movie.
So go ahead and visit Netflix or Blockbuster and see if any of their plans suit your fancy and then takepart to find other ways to shop green with Greenzer.
