In another first day success, President Obama blocked pending food labeling regulations set up by the Bush Administration. The Department of Agriculture proposal would have required certain meats and other perishible items to carry “multicountry” labels if they were produced in domestic facilities that also process animals from abroad, blurring the distinction between U.S. and imported products. It sounds a bit clunky and bureaucratic, but considering all of the recent food contaminations, we know it’s important to know more specifically where our food is coming from. The Obama administration is expected to tighten the measure to achieve more accurate food labeling.
And let’s hope the FDA’s food labeling page gets a makeover like Obama’s White House page.
