Markey to Head House Energy & the Environment Subcomittee Posted by Jon Popham on January 8, 2009 at 2:20 pm

emarkeyMassachusetts Democratic Representative Edward Markey will be the new chairman of the House Energy and the Environment Subcommitte in the incoming Congress.  This is fine news for environmentalists and those concerned about global warming as Markey has long been a strong proponent of higher fuel efficiency standards in automobiles, perhaps one of the most important short term attainable measures to reduce fossil fuel emissions across the country.

The addition of Markey in this key chairmanship along with the coup of Henry Waxman taking the chair of the powerful House Energy and Commerce committee from a longtime Detroit apologist and die hard fuel efficiency obstructionist, Michigan Democrat John Dingell, signals a new age in the House of Representatives at the procedurally crucial, but often overlooked, committee level.
