If you hadn’t noticed, we talk a lot about climate change and global warming on this site (seriously, though - if you haven’t noticed this, I’m not quite sure what you’ve been doing while reading this). Sometimes, though, this talk of temperatures rising and icecaps melting and blah blah blahing makes everything seem somewhat academic, because we can say things like, “Well, all this is well and good, but I don’t actually see anything bad happening from all this.”
It turns Scientific American is calling you out on that mindset, Mister or Miss Naysayer. They’ve compiled a digital slideshow entitled “Top 10 Places Already Affected by Climate Change.” So let’s take a look at a few, shall we?
1. Darfur. Drought, it seems, is a major factor in what has become one of the worst humanitarian crises on the planet (I suggest reading the article to get a better picture than that). And, what caused the drought? Yup. Global climate change.
2. The Gulf Coast. Climate change, of course, is resulting in stronger and more frequent hurricanes. Scientific American notes that this is making it much harder for anyone on the Gulf Coast to get insurance, because companies simply don’t want to take on that risk. Which kind of defeats the purpose of insurance companies.
3. Italy. Interestingly, warmer climates have allowed disease-carrying mosquitoes to live longer and carry things like malaria longer. Thus, in 2007, “an epidemic swept through Castiglione di Cervia, a small village in northern Italy. More than 100 of the town’s 2,000 residents came down with high fever, rashes and crushing pain in their bones and joints.” As global climate rises, we may see more and more of this happening.
That’s just the start. takepart and visit the slideshow to see all 10 places Scientific American profiles. It’s somewhat scary, but quite an eye-opener.
