A growing number of New Yorkers will receive much needed assistance this year, now that Gov. David Paterson authorized $1 million in emergency funding to help the state’s food banks. Our current recession continues to take a devastating toll on individuals and families, so it’s reassuring that people’s most basic needs are being addressed. The governor also announced that New York has received $364 million in federal funding for the state’s Food Stamp Program over the last 15 months. And while it’s upsetting that more people are needing assistance, reaching all time highs, I’m glad that those in need aren’t slipping through the cracks. Patterson clearly understands the vital importance of nutrition and healthy diets, which should have far reaching effects, as the governor suggests:
By contributing to the overall health and well-being of society during this recession, we can also help generate increased activity in our State and national economy, placing New York on a path towards economic recovery.
Hopefully other state’swill follow New York’s lead in helping to protect the health and well-being of every individual, especially those most at-risk.
