Endangered Whales’ Wintering Grounds Found Posted by Andy Kondrat on December 31, 2008 at 2:52 pm

A couple months back, we told you that the government has decided to reduce ship speeds within 20 nautical miles of where the North Atlantic right whale feeds, reproduces, and migrates in an attempt to protect the endangered species.

Why do I bring this up? Because today, MSNBC reports that the government has just discovered a wintering, and possible breeding, ground for the North Atlantic right whale, which would make the enforcement of shipping regulations much more effective.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (so awesome that actually exists) released a statement confirming the government findings.

‘Knowing where the whales are at any time is critical to protect them,’ NOAA said in a statement. “Finding an aggregation of whales can trigger a management action affording protection, such as slowing ship speeds in the vicinity of the whales.’

So, this finding, coupled with the government ruling, could hypothetically mean great things for the right whale. You can takepart and get involved with the International Union for Conservation of Nature, one of the first groups that attempted to raise awareness of the right whales’ plight.
