2008 One Of Worst Years For Natural Disasters Posted by Giulia Rozzi on December 29, 2008 at 10:58 pm

Yahoo news reported today that natural disasters killed over 220,000 people in 2008, making it one of the most devastating years on record and underlining the need for a global climate deal.

“This continues the long-term trend we have been observing. Climate change has already started and is very probably contributing to increasingly frequent weather extremes and ensuing natural catastrophes,” Munich Re board member Torsten Jeworrek said. “It is now very probable that the progressive warming of the atmosphere is due to the greenhouse gases emitted by human activity. The weather machine is running in top gear, bringing more intense severe weather events.” - Yahoo.com/AFP

A large supporter of the Global Climate Deal is Al Gore who recently said at UN climate talks in Poznan, Poland, “our home, Earth, is in danger. What is at risk of being destroyed is of course not the planet itself, but the conditions that have made it hospitable for human beings.”
