Top Ten Ways to Help the Homeless this Holiday Season Posted by Danny Jensen on December 17, 2008 at 4:30 pm

In the mad, gift-buying chaos that precedes the holidays, it’s important to keep in mind those who are less concerned about getting an iPhone, and more focused on staying warm and dry through these wintry days.  And given the current economic chill and housing crisis, increasing numbers of people are finding themselves jobless and homeless.  So, this holiday season, as you scurry around spreading cheer to friends and family, take a moment to share a bit of warmth with those in need.  Here, in no particular order, are the top ten ways to help the homeless this holiday season:

1. Food Banks and Soup Kitchens

Feeding America is an excellent resource if you’d like to volunteer at a soup kitchen in your area or donate food.

2. Donate Clothing

You can drop off gently used clothing or other goods at places like Goodwill or The Salvation Army, and if you have a lot to give, some will even schedule a pick-up.  Also, look for local charities that often have collection sites around this time of year, such as Big Brother/Big Sister.

3. Donate Shoes

When temperatures drop, a sturdy pair of shoes can make a world of difference to someone living outdoors. Soles4Souls is an amazing non-profit that accepts gently used shoes and boots for children and adults in need.

4. Tutor a Homeless Child

If you live in Southern California, you can volunteer with SchoolonWheels to help tutor a homeless child and become a positive role model in their life.  If you live elsewhere, a quick Google search should help you find a similar program near you.

5. Give Personally

Personally handing someone a gift is a terrific way to brighten their day, especially a present that offers warmth.  Jan Gurley of the Los Angeles Times offers a comprehensive guide being a Street Santa.

6. Send Urban Pathways Holiday eCards

Urban Pathways is an remarkable program in New York that helps people transition out of homelessness.  This year their Holiday Card Challenge asks individuals and companies to go green and help the homeless by sending their holiday ecards.

7. Shopping Donations

When you purchase holiday gifts through the Hunger Site, a portion of your purchase goes to help feed those in need.

8.  Help Homeless Veterans

The National Coalition for Homeless Veterans offers suggestions for helping homeless veterans or you can volunteer with IAVA to help those returning from Iraq and Afghanistan.

9.  Help Homeless Teens

Volunteer to help mentor or find stability for homeless and run-away teenagers with programs like Stand Up For Kids.

10. Volunteer at a Homeless Shelter

Use VolunteerMatch to find a homeless shelter or organization in our area to donate your time and service.
