Climate Change Talks Slowed By U.S. Transition: ITOTD Posted by Danny Jensen on December 11, 2008 at 5:01 pm

Caught between two presidencies, it seems the United States has severly hampered the U.N. Global Summit on Climate Change in Poland.  Understandably, Obama can’t very well jump in and start making plans yet, and you can bet that the Bush Administration is not anxious to get involved considering they declined to ratify the preceding Kyoto Protocol.  And with the European Union tied up in their own economic crisis, the rest of the attendees are left twiddling their thumbs, hesitant to make commitments without U.S. and E.U. support.

While participants have been able to outline some plans for the next treaty, to be signed in Copenhagen in 2009, major plans seem to be at a standstill for now.  According to the NYTimes, Tim Wirth, head of the United Nations Foundation says:

“Everybody is waiting for the U.S. cavalry to come over the ridge,” he said. “We’re a major component but not the only component.”
