White Lemuroid Possum May Be First Mammal Extinct Due to Climate Change Posted by Andy Kondrat on December 9, 2008 at 1:21 pm

Oh, look, more awful news about climate change causing some pretty substantial problems: scientists in Australia are saying that we may have lost our first mammal to extinction due to global warming.  That can’t be a good sign.

The Courier Mail has the report that the white lemuroid possum was (hopefully is) an incredibly rare and vulnerable species, and only four or five hours in temperatures about 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit) is enough to kill one of the possums.  Says the article

The white lemuroid possum, a rare creature found only above 1000m in the mountain forests of far north Queensland, has not been seen for three years.  Experts fear climate change is to blame for the disappearance of the highly vulnerable species thanks to a temperature rise of up to 0.8C.

Next year, researchers will make a “last-ditch” effort to see if they can find one of these creatures, but if they can’t, it’s thought that this extinction is the “most significant since the extinction of the Dodo and the Tasmanian Tiger.”  So that’s not so good.
