What do you all think of this? Apparently a school in Olmsted Falls Ohio (a suburb of Cleveland) is joining the ranks of the big banks and automakers and is asking the government for a bailout:
A financially ailing Ohio school district has joined the ranks of banks and automakers clamoring for a portion of the $700 billion economic bailout package. Olmsted Falls Superintendent Todd Hoadley said Tuesday that if automakers and big U.S. cities can ask for federal bailout money, schools should be able to follow suit.
“I feel a moral obligation to our taxpayers to make this attempt,” said Hoadley, who requested $100 million from the Treasury Department last week. “This is a legitimate request. I’ll be frankly disappointed if something positive doesn’t come out of this.” Hoadley said rising enrollment and strained finances have forced the suburban Cleveland district to take measures such as converting maintenance closets into classrooms. Hmm…. this is an interesting development in the bailout drama as of late. As someone who grew up in the suburbs of Cleveland (and whose school system went financially downhill a few years after I left) I’m kind of conflicted. I don’t like the idea of bailouts in general, but also feel like we shouldn’t just be helping the big guns.
What do you think?

I agree with Todd Hoadley Superintendent of Olmsted Falls Schools, I think the government should bailout schools in Ohio and all across the U.S. If we had started doing this 30 years ago maybe teachers could have spent more time teaching basic economics and less time worrying about how they were going to get necessary supplies to do it. Maybe the corporate heads would have learned what every fifth grader should know “when you spend more than you have, you have big problems”.
I don’t agree that the School should get any part of the taxpayers’ bailout money. They are already financed 100% by the taxpayers. The teachers are typically unionized and militant. They work short days (9:00 to 3:00) and have 3 months vacation each year. That has to be a great gig by anyone’s standard.
The School system is already getting enough funding from taxpayers. The school system needs a radical overhaul from top to bottom to eliminate the stagnation and waste that is so prevalent throughout the system. Teachers have too much control over what is taught and how it is taught. There is very little in the way of performance measurement to weed out the lazy and incompetent teachers.
