Laura Bush asked members of Congress to pick local artists to decorate ornaments for the White House Christmas tree. So the Seattle-based artist Deborah Lawrence that was selected by Rep. Jim McDermott to represent state decided to decorate her nine-inch ball (shown) with swirly red and white stripes and tiny text that supports the Democratic congressman’s support for a resolution to impeach President Bush.
Laura Bush’s press secretary Sally McDonough commented on the situation saying:
“it really is too bad. I haven’t seen the ornament, but I would hope that no one would take this as an opportunity to be divisive and partisan. There is a time and place for everything, and I don’t think this is either.” -Washington Post
This seems like the epitome of free speech, eh? Hilarious, if you ask me.
Lawrence was still scheduled to attended a White House reception for the artists today.
