Twlight Takes Over Box Office Posted by Gina Telaroli on November 24, 2008 at 10:04 am

Analysts thought Twilight would get lucky if it got to 60 million dollars this weekend - surprise surprise, it made 70.6 million, meaning that not only did every adolescent girl in America go, but other people did too! The movie actually earned a profit on it’s opening weekend - something that almost never happens. Also of note is that director Catherine Hardwicke now holds the title of female director to make the most money on an opening weekend.

I haven’t seen the movie and can’t speak to it’s quality, but I do think it is kind of nice that a movie other than a silly comedy or action packed big budget extravaganza did so well at the BO.  Twilight might not have subtitles and long takes (things I adore) but it is a change and that’s always refreshing. And speaking of Twilight, there’s an interesting piece over at The Huffington Post about whether the movie is sexist or not. I’ll let you know what I think after I see it (probably not for a week at least)

Also, I actually saw a different vampire movie this weekend called Let The Right One In, it was from Sweden.  It was without fantasy (except for 1-2 fantastical moments) and was extremely bleak, dark and depressing.  It was like watching a horror film inside of a social issues film - without the fun.  That isn’t to say I didn’t like it, I just thought it would be more fun than it was.  It’s hard to go into a film expecting to be scared and instead getting a lesson about bullied and abandoned children.  That being said it is totally a film worth seeing so check out the trailer after the jump. And in honor of vampires, takepart to donate your blood to the Red Cross.
