There’s some more Prop 8/Hollywood controversy out there related to movie businessmen who donated money in support of Proposition 8.  This time it is Cinemark CEO Alan Stock, who donated $9,999 to the “Yes on 8″ campaign. Stock’s contribution is causing people to protest the movie theater chain and specifically any Cinemark theaters that play Gus Van Sant’s upcoming biopic about Harvey Milk.
Milk famously helped helped to defeat Proposition 6 in California in 1978. The proposition would have prohibited homosexuals from working in public schools. People who are against Prop 8 have formed the group No Milk for Cinemark Theaters! and the group is halfway towards their goal of $10,000 dollars or 1,000 members (at 10 bucks a ticket). The money comes in the form of folks who agree to boycott the film and the amount comes to offset what Stark donated to the Yes on 8 campaign.
With the movie receiving considerable buzz and Prop 8 protests getting stronger it will be interesting to see how this plays out when the film opens on November 26.

Their stock has plummeted since the election, too.
Since this report speaks directly about the movie “MILK” and its relevance to today’s issues, it seems worth remembering MIlk’s own feelings with Proposition 6. He felt that, if Prop. 6 was passed, that the gay community would rise up in an angry and perhaps violent offensive that would have been entirely understandable. The chants in the movie portrayed the chants of those days: Civil Rights or Civil War. Gay Rights Now!
We are not in the midst of a polite debate. We are not haggling over a trinket in a foreign bazaar. Prop 8 singles out gays. It strips them of rights. It undermines the very foundations of the Constitution of the country - which has no relationship to biblical belief or religious fantasies. If gays are going to be singled out by the passing of this proposition, then the supporters of it should be targeted. If they are in positions of power, such as CEO of Cinemark, then the foundation of their power ought to be attacked and brought down.
Cinemark is fair game as is the Mormon Church. We are not engaged in a friendly disagreement. These people have mobilized to strip Americans they don’t like or respect of their civil rights. That’s not politics. That is war. Gays have learned how to fight back and we ought to throw our full fury at individuals who funded this fight against us AND their power bases - period.
In the state of California, homosexual and lesbian couples joined in a cival legal union have the same legal rights as heterosexual couples joined in a cival legal union. That is a fact of law. I believe many people on both sides of the debate are not even aware of this fact. For those who are aware, the debate comes down to whether or not homosexual and lesbian couples can use the word ‘marriage’ to denote their union.
