Kundalini Yoga Posted by Giulia Rozzi on November 9, 2008 at 10:27 pm

In 2003 I discovered Kundalini Yoga. I was living in Los Angeles and had been practicing other forms of yoga off and on for a few years. Much of my yoga practice came in the forms of inexpensive $5 community classes (lots of studios offer discount classes during off peak hours) or free trial classes for first time students. While researching a new studio to use my first time student status at I discovered Golden Bridge Yoga.

The site had pics of teachers wearing white turbans and hitting gongs. I thought-weird! And- cool! So I gave Golden Bridge a go and I have been a fan ever since.

Kundalini Yoga, the Yoga of Awareness, was brought to the West by Yogi Bhajan (he’s the cool dude quoted on bags of Yogi tea) in 1968. Kundalini Yoga goes beyond the physical performance of poses with its emphasis on breathing, meditation, and chanting. Kundalini is untapped energy (prana) at the base of the spine that can be drawn up through the body awakening each of the seven chakras. Full enlightenment occurs when this energy reaches the Crown Chakra. Kundalini energy is often represented as a snake coiled at the base of the spine. Kundalini yoga helps reduce stress, stimulate and strengthen the glandular and nervous systems, heighten your creative potential, and can be extremely healing.

Look, I know some people get all weird about yoga. That’s your perogative Bobby Brown. But for me, yoga has changed my life. Some think they can’t physically handle it, or that it’s a bunch of religious hulabaloo. Well pish posh (did I really just write pish posh?) You do yoga at your own personal level and speed. And yoga doesn’t impede on your religious beliefs. Yoga celebrates the spirit, not any one God.

There’s no way to happiness, happiness is the way (as I read months ago)….and by my experience there’s not a way as beautiful as Kundalini Yoga :-)
