My Election Night Posted by Giulia Rozzi on November 5, 2008 at 5:45 pm

I had to cocktail waitress last night (What Giulia?! You mean stand-up comedy and blogging doesn’t cover your cost of living in NYC? Gasp!) I work at a bar that attracts mostly college students or people who think they are college students. It’s a fun bar. Lots of loud drunk people. Good times.

I knew it was going to get rowdy when the election results were announced. The energy in NYC was very Obamastic. Pair over-excitement with booze, and you might get some stupidity.

Now of course, the fact that I was completely sober made me more easily annoyed by the alcohol fueled election-reactions. Surely had I been 14 beers deep I would have thought screaming at the TV waving a middle finger at John McCain would have been hilarious too….actually no, no I would not.

So my election night was comprised of the following:
*A McCain supporter clutching his fists and grinding his teeth howling “yeah, what’s up? What’s that? Huh? F**k you!” at the swarm of Obama supporters in my bar, and me, lil’ ol me trying to calm him down. When I touched his vein popping, rock hard bicep I realized getting the conservative Hulk to chill out would be a task better accomplished by one of the bouncers.
* Me shoving my way through a crowd of kids dancing to “Shout”, getting beer spilled on me by flying elbows during the lines “a little bit louder now”, only to get a $1 tip after delivering 12 drinks.
* Holding back my vomit as I witnessed waaaaaay too much PDA. For some reason Obama winning the election got everyone all hot and bothered. Look a little make out session in a bar is okay, but full-on humping and necking in front of my waitress station? Hell no!
*Listening to two guys go on and on and on about how “It ain’t da white house no more. It’s the mutha-f**king black house yo. The Black house son.”
* Did I mention the crappy tips? (please, takepart and visit http://tipping.org for tips on how to tip your service workers.)

None the less, I couldn’t have been happier. History was made last night! American demanded change and we got it.

Oh and I demanded better tips, and I got it! My new favorite customer left me a sweet 50% tip.

See America, anything is possible.
