“Chocolate News” the all black fake-news style show hosted and created by the hilarious David Alan Grier debuted on Comedy Central last night. The show has a similar fake-news style like The Daily Show With Jon Stewart but focusing on specifically on politically charged black-oriented comedy. The show claims to be an “equal-opportunity offender” skewering rappers, Maya Angelou, gangbangers and election fraud.
I don’t think there is a lot of black comedy out there that is political, said Mr. Bahr, a creator of MadTV with Adam Small, who is also a Chocolate News executive producer. At one point, didn’t Jon Stewart have to say it’s O.K. to laugh about Obama? Mr. Bahr said, referring to the difficulty of some white comedians in satirizing black people or black culture for fear of being labeled insensitive or worse… Comedy Central was skittish after its experience with Mr. Chappelle, who walked away from the third season of his popular series. Mr. Chappelle denied rumors of drug use and a nervous breakdown, but said that he was stressed out and that he became uncomfortable on the show because he feared that some of his humor was misconstrued as demeaning to blacks. It’s a very delicate line to walk, Mr. Grier said. Are you laughing with me because you get the joke, or am I giving you license to laugh at me in a derogatory, dehumanizing way?- NY Times
Fun fact! Griers wife Christine is a curator at The Studio Museum in Harlem takepart and check out http://www.studiomuseum.org/
