EDAR - Everyone Deserves A Roof, Everyone Posted by Guest Blogger on October 13, 2008 at 8:18 am

by Jon Moran and Ann Truong

Last week we got the chance to see a demonstration of Peter Samuelson’s mobile living unit designed for one of the more neglected communities in our country, the homeless.

Peter founded EDAR (Everyone Deserves A Roof), teamed up with several sponsors and has created a mobile living alternative to cardboard boxes, alleys, overhangs, and underpasses.

EDAR Homeless Shelter from takepart on Vimeo.

Even though Peter fully endorses more permanent living solutions for the homeless, the fact is that there are more than 70,000 homeless people with no allocated beds each night in Los Angeles County alone. With the winter quickly approaching and the weather in the northern states getting rapidly harsher, the importance for EDAR to succeed is growing by the minute. The homeless are by and large the most eco-friendly residents of our planet and EDAR is trying to give them a break. When funds are available, the EDAR units are given away to homeless whose primary source of income is recycling. The EDAR units were designed in a competition at the Pasedena Art Center College of Design. They resemble a reinforced shopping cart, they are waterproof, very durable, and have much better wheels that the standard shopping cart which allows for increased mobility and an easier time recycling.

You can takepart l and contribute or volunteer for EDAR and help them accomplish their mission. By donating you are directly bettering the life of an individual who is helping recycle for all of us.

Thanks to TakePart.com for doing this! If anyone out there would like to help, here’s what we need right now:

1. Money. Every $492 gets one man, woman or child off damp concrete. http://www.edar.org Tax deductible!
2. Use of a slightly flat piece of land in greater Los Angeles, like a parking lot or waste land, where EDAR’s can park at night and be left in the daytime if necessary. We’d hire 24/7 security to supervise. We’d install toilets, a phone and a shower. Does not need to be for ever: 9 months or a year would be a good start. julie@edar.org to action a look-see on that.
3. Volunteers. Come help us…. it is going really well, it’s exciting and it is the real deal. Take Part in EDAR! julie@edar.org

Thanks All! Peter Samuelson

Mr. Samuelson is doing what we all should be doing to the degree that we can, and that is making America (the world) stronger by focusing on its foundation which is its people. I will definitely tell everyone I know about this cause and if I ever get the money I will give to this cause. We must do better as a nation. The perilous feel of the times susggests that we can no longer afford the status quo approach to humanity.

I saw Mr. Samuelson on CNN and he hit all of the correct points concerning the need for this type of housing and why any dissent is misguided and shortsighted. To all people in the world who can see beyond their own issues to be concerned about another, I give thanks.

i don’t understand why you would ask someone why do you care so much about the homeless. why don’t you care is the real question! i applaud mr. samuelson for his attempt to help those less fortunate. it is christmas time and who deserves to be homeless. he has my prayers and if i can do anything to help with this work of an angel, i would gladly do so. finally, an advocate for the forgotten with a plan. thank you

Since the earlly 70’s, during the time of living near the Mission Street area in San Fran and seeing so many homeless I’ve consistently been amazed that this could occur in a land with so much
… I contacted a guy named Mitch in DC who was the most recognized homeless advocate of
the time to put a book together … he agreed to do the forward … unfortunately Mitch passed
during a hunger strike he went on for the sake of calling attention to the homeless. In this
current time, I am still amazed at the lack of empathy for those who but for the grace of God
could be … any of us. I would very much like to help out with your project, and am currently
living in South Florida where many unfortunate souls are in this predicament. I also have an
idea that I would like to discuss with someone from your group concerning the feasibility of
hooking up some of the foreclosed and boarded up homes with those in need, also with an
eye toward counselors, career guidance, health care workers, therapists, etc. rotating through.
All this could be in line with Obama’s creating jobs and volunteer opportunities, as well as
the gazillion dollar infusion of the Congress to the banks, which as far as I can see has done
nothing to make any situation better. It seems like such a perfect match … empty homes …
people who need homes … infusion of funds for revitalization of all involved.
