Proponents of Prop 8 began their ad campaign to eliminate marriage for same-sex couples in California. The Yes-on-8 commercial claims that the California Supreme Court “mandated” the right to marry for same-sex couples and, as a result, school children will be taught about same-sex marriage unless Prop 8 passes. This ad is infuriating. The notion that gay marriage will be taught in school is infuriating. The concept that the court mandated people to believe in gay marriage is infuriating. The idea of banning gay marriage is infuriating. (Can you tell I am indeed, infuriated?) I’m not gay but compromising the rights of homosexuals compromises the rights of all people. It compromises human rights! It dictates our personal choice to create a partnership with whomever we choose. (Remember choice? Wasn’t that once a selling point for the USA? That Americans have choices?) Allowing gay marriage only does one thing: uphold America’s promise of liberty and justice for all. Even me writing the phrase “allowing gay marriage” seems idiotic, it’s like saying “allowing two people to love one another.” Allow? Who is anyone to say what kind of love is allowed in this world? Love and marriage is everyone’s right.
Google recently made a statement against Prop 8. Read their views in the Google blog. I mean, Google knows like everything. Listen to Google. Vote NO on 8!

(Note that the Yes-on-folks disabled the ability to leave comments on their Youtube ad but the No-on-8 people allowed comments? One group is giving viewers the FREEDOM to express themselves and the other is not. Interesting…)

i have been working the phone banks here in CA and it’s so important that this measure is defeated, because it will help secure equal rights for gay and lesbian folks all over the country. one step at a time and perhaps in my lifetime, i will live in a country that knows no prejudice. thanks for writing about this. you’re a rock star!
I don’t think just disabling comments is going to accomplish anything. To really make a statement, they ought to consider following the example of ThÃÂch Qu?ng ??c.
I think it is quite annoying that none of these ads depict gay or lesbian marriages or same sex unions. They have to recruit the hetero-crowd to suffice their battles. Why have we not seen a blantant ad that depicts a gay couple getting married; or why is the tag line on these ads: “equality for all”. This is quite deceiving. The main topic here is equal recognition for gay and lesbian marriages. No more, no less. I would like to see some truth here. Unfortunately a small special interest group is once again attempting to curb the laws of the land to dictate their interest, not that of the general public. I have spoken t many people who initially opposed Prop 8 and I find it interesting that they really do not know what it is all about. That is the game here, deceive and unroll the untruths of the prop 8 no battle. I contend this oppositition and I will defend my rights as a married man to a woman to keep the term marriage defined as a one man, and one woman. Here’s an idea, why don’t the gay and lesbian populous define a new term and submit that to law…..it would never happen.

If the California gay marriage ruling is not overturned, teachers will be required to teach young children there is no difference between gay marriage and traditional marriage. You are right on target Parker. A marriage is and has always been between one man and one woman. Why should my daughter be taught differently. I have no doubt that if this amendment is not passed, this special interest group will force its beliefs on my family, just as it was in Mass. Now who’s rights are being violated
i have nothing against gays, but i DO NOT want my children coming home and telling me that they learned about gays at school. That is wrong! why is getting married so important? it is nothing but a legal peice of paper that says your married. if you love eachother then why does it matter if your married or not. dont force other people to accept YOUR way of living. its not what the majority of the u.s. was brought up to think and believe. so if your gay, then hey good for you, but you dont see all the straight people having straight parades and protests.

I was saddened when HGTV aired a Yes on 8 ad. They must know that they have (had) lots of gay views. Shame on them
KOIT Radio and KTVU air Yes on 8 ads. Shame on them. NO ON 8. It’s about civil rights.

The right for a man and woman to marry is more than a civil right is a natural right. These rights as outlined in the Declaration of Independence are dictated by God not man. “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights…” Whether you like it or not, the creator that the author was speaking of IS the God of the Bible, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and he did not give a man the right to marry another man, nor the right for a woman to marry another woman. In fact, He expressly denied this right in many passages. One for example, Leviticus 18:22 & 24-30 “You shall not lie with man as with woman… It is an abomination.” You might disagree with the theology of the Bible, but it IS what our nation was founded upon. To delineate from these truths begins this slow, snowball effect that will eventually leave our Great Nation, just another, among many in this world. Godlessness is anarchy, as then their is no moral absolute, so be very careful with the complacent idea that “what they do, or who they ‘marry” does not affect me.

Some important factors to consider:
1. separation of church and state
2. old testament: divorce is bad, eating pork is bad, rape is ok
3. families will be hurt
4. rights are being eliminated: what is next? gays can get fired from a job? gays are everywhere and they will not be disappearing any time soon. They are doctors, lawyers, airline pilots, etc., Let’s not perpetuate stereotypes of promiscuity and allow them equal treatment under the law. No church will be forced to marry anyone and no gays will want to marry where they are not welcome. Please don’t be so casual about hurting my family. Being gay is not something one chooses. Let’s start a path to a healthier future, and let’s stop the hate.
We don’t let brothers and sisters get married. We don’t let uncles and nieces get married. Marriage is our social institution for promoting only certain relationships, those that our society believes are morally acceptable and socially beneficial. Voting YES on Prop 8 will NOT deny equality of rights; the Domestic Partnership laws and the anti-discriminatory laws already exist. A YES vote on Prop 8 WILL tell the gay and lesbian community we will not let them (or 4 Activist Supreme Court Judges) define what the rest of us believe is morally acceptable or socially beneficial.
The gay and lesbian population represent less than 3 percent of our state’s population and few of them have or would choose to marry; the opposition of the gay and lesbian community and their supporters to Prop 8 is about their determination to change the moral beliefs of our society and gain social acceptance for a lifestyle that has for ages been regarded as immoral, just like adultery and prostitution.
Through the centuries, marriage has always been about promoting relationships that will be the most beneficial for our children. Children in stable homes with both a father and a mother married to each other will have fewer psychological, emotional and physical health problems, fewer drug and alcohol problems, and be able to take their places in and contribute to our society. Please Vote YES for Proposition 8.
