Independent Film Week might be over but I’ve still got a few awesome panels to report on - including one of the more interesting ones, entitled “Subjective : Working With Documentary Subjects.” The panel consisted of an awesome moderator - Silverdoc’s Sky Sitney and 4 pretty great lady filmmakers, Nina Davenport of Operation Filmmaker, Tia Lessin of Trouble the Water, Lucia Small of The Axe in the Attic and Cynthia Wade of Freeheld.
The four directors opened the session by showing a clip for each of their films and talking a bit about the particulars of their relationships to their subjects. Since you weren’t there to see them, trailers for each film are below:

Each director then talked more in detail about their experience. Â On Operation Filmmaker for example, Nina Davenport shot scenes with herself and without herself. Â She didn’t originally want to be a part of her film but she was finding herself becoming more and more involved with the story and wanted to have the option of working it in if she needed to. Â Â Davenport also talked about her perspective on the film as she went into the project with a certain amount of guilt from what the United States was doing to Iraq.
On Trouble the Water, Tia Lessin and her co-director happened upon their subjects and knew from the beginning that the story didn’t have anything to do with them. Â Â Their dilemma came in how to credit their subjects, who happened to shoot quite a bit of their footage and also added music to the film.
On The Axe in the Attic the directors became a part of the film and had to deal with folks asking for money and how to deal with the fact that their centered on many many people who were less fortunate than them. Lucia discussed what that was like and how folks have reacted to scenes where they refused to give people money.
Freeheld was a very tough case as the director knew her subject was going to die and had to balance what she wanted her film to be with the fact that her subjects were going through what would be the hardest time of their lives. Â Cynthia would sleep at their house and at times would have to answer questions about whether her subject would attend Q&As or whether her funeral would be a part of the film.
Overall what was amazing about this panel, more than the specifics of what the women were saying, was getting to sit and listen to amazing female documentary directors talk about their work for an entire hour! Â Very cool.
