Kelly Reichardt’s Wendy and Lucy
Screening Saturday September 27th at 9:30 and Sunday September 28th : 3:15
I’m hesitant to say much more about Kelly Reichardt’s Wendy and Lucy than SEE IT. I’m still trying to settle the film down inside of me but will try to give you all a small taste (more later!)
It’s a simple film but rich in it’s depiction of American life and of keeping calm while trying to move forward even as problems are enveloping you.
The plot, to keep it basic, revolves around Wendy, a twenty something woman and Lucy, her dog. Â They find themselves in Oregon, living in a car and making their way to Alaska - in hope of a better life. Â In the particular Oregon town we meet them in, Wendy and Lucy run into some small but devastating complications.

Michelle Williams is at her best as Wendy and keeps her character’s emotions so bottled up that you yourself want to scream to help her out. Â Her attempts to keep moving, to keep her mind on the simple task ahead paint a very different portrait of American hardship than most films. Â
We so often see the folks that are failing to make it in society as slightly crazy, lazy or just bad people. Â Here we have a woman who is in many ways trying her best and society for the most part simply isn’t helping out.
It’s a beautiful slow film - you have to settle into it, but once you do the rewards are endless.

i really wanted to like this movie! the acting is ok. the drama is at best mediocre. the story is forgetable. without michelle williams, this movie would have stood no chance of getting made. so much about celebrity culture in ‘deep’ producers who want to counter the mainstream. this movie is 80 minutes and feels like 3 hours. it could have been in-camera editing and, worst of all, it is dead boring. in movies, for me, this is a deadly sin.
b.stein - sorry you didn’t like it. I think boring is something that differs from person to person, I found the film riveting. Also, I think it probably would have got made without Michelle - Kelly Reichardt makes films minimally and has a certain following. This isn’t made to be a mainstream film.
Unfortunately mainstream cinema is so formulaic that when we are presented with narratives that don’t follow that formula we find them hard to digest. This is a shame as the most exciting cinema these days is cinema that requires being able to digest films that live outside the formulas and plotty action.
I loved this movie. But to b.stein’s defense, I can see why this film can be “a love it/hate it” one. I don’t think it is an easy one to get into for most people. Definitely not mainstream. The rhythm is slow, the topic is gloomy, … but this is my kind of movie: a slice of life, of a life so different from mine. In some aspects it makes me think of a documentary. The cinematography is beautiful, Michelle Williams surprised me, and the subject matter is pretty haunting.
As for whether this film would have been made with Michelle Williams or not, I think it may have been but would probably not have the chance to resonate outside of its niche audience.
Btw, have you guys been able to find a trailer for this movie? I can’t find a thing.
