Afghans for Civil Society is a downright heroic non-profit organization rebuilding one of the most troubled countries on Earth. Â Afghanistan has been afflicted by nearly constant strife and violence for at least thirty years, spanning the end of the Cold War with the Soviet Invasion to the present day where NATO forces continue to battle the Taliban. Â Amidst this constant upheaval, Afghans for Civil Society (ACS) is working on multiple fronts to reconstruct the societal framework of this rich, vibrant culture.
Founded by Baltimore businessman Qayum Karzai, brother of Afghanistan’s President Hamid Karzai, in 1998, ACS has made a focus of its work to promote women’s issues in Afghanistan, providing employment for over 500 women in Kandahar alone, promoting female participation in local governance and establishing strong social networks to facilitate empowerment. Â ACS has also helped reconstruct villages and schools in Afghanistan while organizing humanitarian shipments there. Â The non-profit also helped establish the first independent radio station in Kandahar - Afghan Azada Radio 88.0.
You can takepart by learning more about Afghans for Civil Society’s many programs promoting education, women’s rights, economic upliftment and democracy in Afghanistan.
