Hey there Takepart Readers, I took a little blogging break but now I’m back! Did you miss me? I missed you!
Although I’m a twenty-something gal, summers still seem like school vacation to me. I work very little and play very hard during those glorious June to August summa vaca -y months, and then I welcome September fresh with energy, ideas and a great tan. For me, “new years” is really September 1.
So kiddies, my treat to you as we begin this new semester, er um.. I mean season is this lovely little link to a great article on Zenhabits.net.
http://zenhabits.net/2008/08/lifes-enough-stop-comparing-yourself-to-others/
My dear friend Brandy Barber (who has an awesome blog you should read at http://www.brandyforsale.blogspot.com) who first introduced me to Zen Habits (I’ve mentioned this great site in the past) sent me this article last week and man, did it speak to me.
I am absolutely a self-admitted compare-a-holic. I hate it. I used to think I needed to compare myself to others to determine my success, but as I evolve closer to the person I want to be ( and know I can be) I realize success is personal and part of success is being present in your quest as Zenhabits explains:
Focus on the journey. Don’t focus on how you rank in comparison to others life is not a competition. It’s a journey. We are all on a journey, to find something, to become something, to learn, to create. That journey has nothing to do with how well other people are doing, or what they have. It has everything to do with what we want to do, and where we want to go. That’s all you need to worry about.
I have yet to fully resign to this way of thinking, so one of my goals this year is to really embrace the journey. The time I spend comparing myself to others is time I could spend working on my goals. It’s not an habit to break, we are raised to judge ourselves based on outside factors, but I think it’s a vital habit to break in order to achieve true success.
