Classic movie fans have reason to be excited, Ernest Borgnine has a new biography out called Ernie. The book covers his childhood as the son of Italian immigrants, his Oscar win for his role in Marty and everything in between.
I’ve always like Borgnine, especially for his work in Johnny Guitar, The Wild Bunch, Bad Day at Black Rock and of course Marty.
The book is full of fun excerpts about his life and his films, the one below made the Italian-American in me smile:
While shooting on location in New York for “Marty.” Borgnine was confronted by a gang of Italian-American toughs who were mad at him for “killing” Sinatra in “From Here to Eternity.” They were about to beat him up when he explained that he was Italian himself and that he and Sinatra were buddies. “From then on, I was getting pizza brought to me on the set, every day,” he writes, “I had gallons of wine delivered to my dressing room.” [NYPOST]
Borgnine used to be a household name and face but classic movies don’t seem to appeal to the kids they way they used to. Hopefully his new bio will encourage folks to check out his work. For now, takepart to read an excerpt from his book and watch some classic Borgnine moments below:
