Vegetable Garden on White House Lawn? Posted by Nicole Hughes on August 4, 2008 at 10:48 pm

Roger Doiron, founder of Kitchen Gardeners International (whom fellow TakeParter Gina pointed us in the direction of the other day) has started a campaign to encourage the next President of the United States to grow a vegetable garden on the First Lawn. His video, titled “This Lawn Is Your Lawn,” shows how easy it is to plant a garden in front of your own home. Fun Fact: Eleanor Roosevelt’s victory garden, planted in front of the White House in 1943, inspired millions of Americans to follow suit. By the time the war ended in 1945, 40 percent of all produce in the US was grown at home.

Growing produce at home is about as local as you can get! takepart and check out how the Kitchen Gardeners are doing it. Be sure to leave comments below and tell us about your own adventures in home gardening.

This plan is over the top and NOT GREEN.
First, it is a huge security risk, one that Roger refuses to see. Volunteers cannot take care of the garden because someone could potentially come in and put a harmful substance in the garden. Some suggest school children come take of it. FROM WHERE? Busing kids in from all over??? School buses leave huge carbon footprints!!! NOT GREEN! And, DC schools cannot be expected to take care of it, either. So, it means having paid staff take care of it. ADDITIONAL STAFF. When I tried to tell Roger how much it would cost, he stopped our conversation. HE DOESN’T WANT YOU TO KNOW. We estimate a conservative $500,000 it will cost each year. NOT GREEN to pay someone to garden for you! Addiional kitchen staff will be required, as well.
NONE of these people are willing to move their families here to take care of this garden. They just run their mouths about their ideas but won’t do the dirty work LITERALLY.

I SUPPORT A SMALL FAMILY GARDEN PROPORTIONATE TO WHAT ANY AMERICAN FAMILY CAN PLANT IN THEIR OWN BACKYARD NOT A 1 ACRE FARM. Something the Obamas could actually go out and enjoy and allow the girls to be involved with. Americans don’t have 1 acre!

It would set an example for America. We must learn to raise our own food and stop depending on other countries food resources which maybe causing us health problems.
