Save the Water (and the Whales) Posted by Martin Musatov on July 30, 2008 at 7:15 pm

When it comes to water conservation, a little effort makes a big difference.   Here are six things you can do to takepart:

  1. Water your lawn only when it needs it.   Here’s how to tell: step on the grass.   If it stays flat, whip out the sprinkler.   If it springs back up, you’re doing fine.
  2. Water when it’s cool outside.   This reduces evaporation and aids absorption.   Early morning is better than dusk because it helps prevent fungus.
  3. Plant drought-resistant grass, trees and plants.
  4. Use a broom instead of a hose to clean your driveway and sidewalk.   Our driveways don’t have to look like Michael Bay shooting a Nissan commercial.   This also keeps our oceans clean by preventing plastic wrappers entering storm drains.
  5. Wash your car at a commercial car wash.   (Yes, the one time going commercial is green).   Most commercial car washes recycle the water.   Unless you’re really good with just a bucket or two.
  6. Collect condensate water from air conditioners and use it to water your plants.   You can also used those half-full bottles of water left over from the gym, or even a glass of water you’re not going to drink.   The plant doesn’t mind.
