Fat Princess Video Game: The Joke’s Not Really That Funny Posted by Nicole Hughes on July 29, 2008 at 5:00 pm

The Fat Princess video game has been causing quite a stir amongst feminist gamers over the last couple weeks. The Sony game has a capture the flag theme, where the objective is to feed as much cake as possible to your princess so that she becomes fat enough for it to become possible for the opposing team to kidnap her and carry her out. It’s a play on the old damsel in distress narrative, but as one Feministe writer noted, the joke is that no one would actually want to rescue a fat princess.   And errr fat people are just really funny?  Here’s a YouTube of the video game – Fat Princess shows up at 1:57 min if you want to skip ahead.

And here’s more from Feministe:

The cartoon-logic is impeccable. It’s also very recognizable, from a long history of our culture mocking the fat, blaming fat people for their bodies, perpetuating all sorts of bullshit about fat. It’s so recognizable that it doesn’t really need to be explained to anyone who has a problem with this kind of mockery.

Oh, with shows like Family Guy and the Simpsons, it’s ok to depict men as being fat and mentally challenged, but god forbid a woman would have to be portrayed as fat in a cartoon-style video game. I guess these feminists are ignoring games like Heavenly Sword. Grow a sense of humor and take a joke. It’s a harmless videogame, not a brainwashing tool.

you know i dont know why they have this acceptances group problems. Being Fat is each person responsability to decide to be or not. Nobody is shoveling food down nobodys mouth . If a person decides to eat for breakfast a mc griddle or pancakes with bacon instead a plate of fruits ( or something less caloric) is the person decision no one elses. If somebodys weight interferes with my space I have a problem. If an overweighted person sits next to me and he or she has to take some of the space I paid so they can fit. Is that fair?. If it is let smokers smoke where they want. And truth to be told nobody enjoys fat, talking from own experience it is not pleasant to being able to reach some parts of your body because your own is in the way
